What do you call a key ring holder?

A key ring holder is most commonly called a keychain. Depending on the design and how it’s used, people also call it a key holder, key fob, key ring, or key organizer. The right name usually comes down to what the accessory actually does: carry, protect, or organize keys.

Common names (and when they apply)

Keychain: The everyday, catch-all term for something that holds keys and attaches to a ring, clip, or strap.

Key ring: Often refers specifically to the metal ring itself, but many shoppers use it to mean the whole piece.

Key holder: A broader term that can mean a pocket accessory, a leather case, or even a wall-mounted holder—anything that “holds” keys.

Key fob: Traditionally a small ornament or tag attached to keys; now also used for electronic car fobs and the accessories attached to them.

Key organizer: A more structured option designed to keep multiple keys compact and quiet, often in a folding or enclosed format.

When “key holder” is the better description

If the accessory is designed to protect a car key, reduce scratches, or add a more secure grip—especially with leather and a dedicated attachment point—“key holder” can be more accurate than “keychain.” This is common with premium car key accessories where the goal is equal parts function and finish.

Choosing the right style for everyday carry

For minimal bulk, a simple keychain and ring works well. For a cleaner pocket carry and added protection, a structured key holder or organizer is often a better fit—especially for car keys.
